The Big Rat lives a Second Life

Recently reunited for a private concert *) at the House of Blues Anaheim, CA, the German band left no doubts, that they are masters of heavy metal and masters of party too.

You have to hear Big Rat live, to understand what makes that band so special. Big Rat Live: "It hits you like a freight train, and a very fast one!" However, it also makes everybody feel party and having a good time - the mantra of Big Rat. "We never intended to create a better to world by getting involved in politics. If we can help making things better, it's because we make people having a good time", says Chris bass and motor of the band.

Founded 1988 in Nuremberg, Germany by five musical individualists: Pete De Lena (guitars), Rat Gepard (vovals), Francis "Cat" Strudl (keyboards), HH Hammer (drums) and Chris Tough (bass), the band’s first album "Big Rat" was released in 1990 on vinyl. (Only 250 CD copies were made at that time). The songs on the album were clearly influenced from the heavy metal wave in the mid to late 80`s. When drummer Wully Kellner joined in 1992, it enabled the band to experiment with cross-over into different styles, including Funk as well as the then upcoming Grunge. The 93 concert line up included even heavy songs with German lyrics, a combination that became a few years later very successful for some other German bands. Big Rat went back to English lyrics.

With Chris leaving town in 93 and Francis and Rat running their own businesses, the band activities turned slow. A "last concert" that was never intended to be the last in April 1993 at the "Fruehlingsfest Nuremberg" left a crowd of 2500 poised to party and a security crew helpless trying to clear the front of the stage. In summer 93 the band recorded a few more new songs that never made it to stage or an album. Some, like Motorcycle Mama made it on to later solo projects of Rat Gepard. While the Big Rat went into hibernation, the musicians weren't.

Rat Gepard did several solo and commercial projects and together with Francis joined Survivor for the production and promotion of the album "Empires" in xxxx. Wolfram became a permanent member of the very popular German comedy band J.B.O. while Pete founded a music school as well as a commercial Party band "Trio Washington". When Chris, called in summer 2006 the band together for one more concert, already the first rehearsal let to believe for more. The concert on January 18th made it fact: the Big Rat is alive. A live proven, experienced rock band today, facing the 20th anniversary, fresh and up to date more then ever.

De Lena's powerful but sensitive guitar work, Rat's thriving vocals and distinguished voice, framed by Francis's delicate keyboards and sound scapes, merciless driven by Wully and Chris -
If you like Hard & Heavy Rock, you can't escape the Big Rat.
