The Story behind the song SECOND LIFE by Big Rat

The Band Big Rat and it´s second life.

When Chris called and asked if it would be worth getting Big Rat after 13 years together for a concert at House of Blues in Anaheim, Los Angeles, CA, it didn´t take long to decide for it. So the band got together and browsed through a list of old Big Rat songs but decided to create some new material as well.

The first rehearsals made it obvious: despite the different career paths ,life styles and the related experiences, each "individual Rat" still maintained the hot blooded, real Rock´ n´ Roll musician in a kind of parallel live. This concert on January 18th at HOB in Los Angeles was about to bring the Big Rat back to a second life.

The song idea and "Rat´s" inspirations

Rat Gepard has always been attracted to controversial thoughts about ways to find the spirit of being - energy - and the light of life.

In November of 2006 the discussion about the Internet platform SecondLifeTM became more and more present in radio talk shows and newspapers. It also became a discussion between Francis and Rat in the beginning of the work on new song material. They planned to bring the whole band into the digital world to get new experiences. The process that automatically followed this idea can only be described with the result:
We got it! We got it all! We got that little something we looked for many years: song, sense and spirit in one.

The platform SecondLifeTM shows in a very easy way how to find to yourself. Just paint a picture of what you believe and you´ll be there soon. The link into philosophy, for example avatar training or teleporting poised Rat to made the phantasm become a lyric. The multi track live recording of the HOB concert provided Rat with the playback and catalyzed his ideas into the final song.

While the theme of rebirth and second life in itself can fill hundreds of books, he decided to keep the language of the platform without trying to interpret any conclusions. The whish brought out in the chorus: “I wanna be king, I wanna be cool” is something most confident persons would claim for themselves, and unconsciously everybody probably would. (Who would not?)
"I wanna have fun and party with you" - that´s the Big Rat mantra. The band never intended to change the world by getting in political statements, but contributing to a better world by letting people have a good time, providing them with a positive vibe: politics can´t change the world, only
positive energy can. Energy is Infinity

The challenge - virtual versus real life

The website "secondlife.com" is a typical representative of the virtual, the cyber world. So describing basic elements in the lyrics and using visuals of it´s content in the video was just a perfect fit.
The band Big Rat is the real life, not edited old school. It is not a synthetic, artificially produced product, it is result of the interaction of five very experienced, musical individuals, and their live performance. Of course Big Rat has recorded material, but in order to get the real thing one need to be exposed to them life. There is too much positive energy that´s flooding down from stage then any media device would be able to capture. The second life of Big Rat only exists real and live.

The Final Conclusion

Digital being - started right now.
World wide infection - to loose control.

And we try and we try and we try and we try
And we are what we are…….

To be finished by yourself.
